Testimonies

“Complementary school is excellent for pupils who require extra support or for those who love to learn.  My daughter, Na-Keisha, was a combination of both.  Complementary school helped Na-Keisha in areas of Maths that the school had brought to my attention.  I helped her at home but was relieved to know that Na-Keisha could attend complementary school and receive additionally support from professional, dedicated and friendly staff.  I believe complementary school helped toward Na-Keisha achieving all 5’s in SAT’s.  I would like to thank the complementary school and it's staff.” (Parent)

“It helped me a lot particularly in Maths which was my weakest subject.  In my SATs I got all 5’s which me and my family are very proud of and I think complementary school helped me in this. At first I thought it would be boring and just like another day at school but it’s different because I enjoyed it at the same time as learning.  Complementary school influenced me to work harder in my studies and not to give up.” (Na-Keisha - Pupil)

Regarding Aqoon’s ‘Celebrating for Success’ event:

“It was clear from the event and from the information that I have gathered about Aqoon Community Education Services that a very effective partnership has been formed between children and young people, parents, the community, Aqoon and a number of schools within the city. I want to reiterate my commitment to doing what I can to support not only the work of Aqoon, but also the development of similar approaches to removing barriers to children’s achievement across the city as a whole.” (Rachel Dickinson, Strategic Director, Children & Young People Service, Leicester City Council)

“Aqoon understands the education system and terms used in statements. We shall undoubtedly get more Somali children who need extra support. It will be hard to give them the best if this facility is not here. The amount of support has been fantastic. We were very happy with the service we received. We want to take up the training on Somali culture for our staff.  We shall work with Aqoon for as long as they are here.” (Liz Griffith, Head of Year 7, Ellesmere College)

“My attendance at the ‘Celebrating Success’ event gave me an insight into the extent of the work that is being led on by Aqoon and how much as a city we should support and foster their development. Aqoon can help the city and individual schools in a huge range of ways including academic success, personal development of pupils, community cohesion and support for parents so that they may take a more active role in their child’s education to name but a few.” (Jill Griffin, Head Teacher, Evington Valley Primary School)
