It became a registered charity in September 2009 after it successfully completed a project funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation in 2008.
The service aims to bridge the gap between parents, carers and schools and facilitate better communication through mediation, advocacy, education and training. This builds on Aqoon’s work with children, families and schools by focusing on the need to improve mutual understanding between parents, carers and schools and helping to raise pupils’ learning and achievement.
The service also intends to influence and change the perception of BME parents, especially Somali parents towards the diverse methods of educational support that are available for children in schools. Aqoon School-Home Support Services particularly wants to increase take up of support by parents with children with learning difficulties and disabilities.
After the successful completion of the project in the first year the Leicester City Council’s Children and Young People Services agreed to sustain the project and provided financial assistance.
“I am delighted, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, staff and volunteers, to welcome you to our website.
I would like to take this opportunity to summarise about Aqoon School Home Support Services and its mission.
Aqoon School-Home Support Services is a community based intervention and prevention programme aimed to bridge gaps of provision and support for children, young people and their families.
Our mission is to support and assist children and their families. Hundreds of children and their families have benefited from Aqoon’s work since its establishment, fulfilling the academic potential of these children and enjoying happier, healthier lives as a family.
Our mission is co-opted with the Every Child Matters Agenda whereby the target youngsters are better equipped to enjoy and achieve, stay safe and make a positive contribution to the communities through various activities, such as study support, mentoring and pastoral support, recreation, integration, and enhancing self-esteem.
As our philosophy is “Far kaliya fool ma dhaqdo” – a Somali phrase which means “A single finger cannot wash a face,” We have an excellent, mutual understanding and spirit of partnership with local schools, higher and further education institutions and other community organisations. Some of the above projects would have been realistically difficult and might be undeliverable without the partnership of our dedicated partners and we are grateful for their contribution and commitment over the last year.”
