The project was set up after the initial identification of needs was undertaken. In partnership with the Local Education Authority we held a Home School Liaison Conference in June 2007 for newly arrived families in the city. Over fifty delegates attended comprising head teachers, education practitioners and officers, parents and community members. The need for more effective home school liaison for newcomers was highlighted.
The Home School Support Service aims to facilitate effective communication between schools, educational support agencies and black and minority ethnic parents and children in Leicester.
The service aims to bridge the gap between parents, carers and schools and facilitate better communication through mediation, advocacy, education and training.
The new service intends to influence and change the perception of black and minority ethnic parents towards the diverse methods of educational support that are available for children in schools. Aqoon particularly wants to increase take up of support by parents with children with learning difficulties and disabilities.
“It helped me a lot particularly in Maths which was my weakest subject. In my SATs I got all 5’s which me and my family are very proud of and I think complementary school helped me in this. At first I thought it would be boring and just like another day at school but it’s different because I enjoyed it at the same time as learning. Complementary school influenced me to work harder in my studies and not to give up.”
